Show Notes
Welcome to the Somerset Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) podcast!
In this episode, Deep Dive into Dementia III – Glorious Opportunity, our host Dr. Peter Bagshaw is joined by Dr. Jennifer Bute, an ex-GP, author and expert by experience, to discuss dementia in detail.
The SEW podcast was a free weekly show hosted by Dr. Andrew Tresidder, Dr. Peter Bagshaw and Dr. Kate Staveley; after this episode, it has now become the Health and Self Care podcast. In each episode, the doctors discuss a different topic related to mental and emotional wellbeing and often invite expert guests to join them in conversation. The show is aimed at the people of Somerset and beyond; the advice and guidance provided should apply to anybody who needs it, whenever they need it.

Glorious Opportunity – My name is Dr Jennifer Bute. I used to be a GP but I retired early with early onset Alzheimer's Disease. Since then it has become my passion to try and help people understand about it, because I do believe it is a great opportunity, a God-given unexpected gift in order to understand this hurt section of society. This website contains different resources that I hope you will find useful. I have made a number of videos, and enjoy speaking at conferences, and at meetings for doctors, carers or relatives
Dementia from the Inside - Jennifer Bute was a highly qualified senior doctor in a large clinical practice, whose patients included those with dementia. Then she began to notice symptoms in herself. She was finally given a diagnosis of Young Onset Dementia in 2009.
After resigning as a GP, she resolved to explore what could be done to slow the progress of dementia. The aim of this practical book is to help people who are living with dementia and to give hope to those who are with them on the dementia journey.
Jennifer believes that her dementia is an opportunity as well as a challenge. Her important insights are that the person inside remains and can be reached, even when masked by the condition, and that spirituality rises as cognition becomes limited.
The observant physician shines through in Dr Bute's book, while her practical advice reveals the resourcefulness of an inventor. Alzheimer s disease has surely met one of its toughest ever adversaries!
